Principals in the Sioux City Community School District now have the chance to become a student in the Career Academy.
That’s all happening through the Academy’s newest CTE Initiative, which stands for Career and Technical Education. Through the project, principals can choose two pathways they want to explore and become students for half a day.
Leaders at the Sioux City Career Academy started this so principals know more about what goes on in the Career Academy.
Every year, 8th graders in the district get a tour of the Career Academy and learn all the pathways available. With this initiative, their principals will have the experience to help students choose a pathway.
“I want them to come in here and just reinvigorate it for, like, what is going to become of the students that they’re working with day in and day out in the middle schools and the high schools,” said Eric Kilburn, Principal at the Career Academy. “Then just the intention of being able to talk to them and communicate with them about, ‘What are their hopes and dreams?’ And here’s how the career can get you there. So they’re just going to be a little bit more knowledgeable when they’re speaking with their children.”
Erica Somsky, head principal at East Middle School, got to take part in the educational and fashion pathways Thursday afternoon. She said the experience allowed her to see what her students could do in the future.
“They get the hands-on opportunity here and so it’s it’s very neat and different way of learning that they get to be exposed to. Yes, they have some opportunities in middle school but they’re older, they have different likes and wants and so getting able to see an experience, a variety of those is really neat to be a part of,” said Somsky.
Leaders at the Career Academy hope that all the principals in the district get a chance to have this experience.
