Sioux City, Iowa – Kate Albrecht, a 6th grade English teacher at East Middle School, has been named District Teacher of the Year for Sioux City Community Schools. Albrecht was recognized with the award on Thursday at East Middle School.
Albrecht has 37 years of teaching experience in the District, beginning her career in 1989 at Whittier Elementary School and then Hawthorne Elementary School teaching 1st grade. She joined East Middle School as a 6th grade English teacher in 1990.
Albrecht earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Morningside University in Sioux City.
Jim Vanderloo, interim superintendent of the Sioux City Community School District, says Albrecht’s student-centered approach and longstanding commitment has left an extraordinary imprint on the East Middle community.

She is simply one of the best, and we are very fortunate to have her energy, enthusiasm, and dedication on our team. Kate sets a high bar for educators. She represents every quality we look for in a District Teacher of the Year recipient.”
Each year, every school in the Sioux City Community School District selects a recipient as its Building Teacher of the Year. One teacher is selected amongst the group of building recipients as District Teacher of the Year.

Albrecht’s name will be submitted to the Iowa Department of Education for consideration as the state’s Iowa Teacher of the Year recognition.
