Sioux City, Iowa— The Sioux City Career Academy and Morningside University have officially announced the launch of the Siouxland Start Program. This new collaborative initiative provides local high school students with a rigorous head start in their college education and future careers, with a specific focus on the high-demand fields of Education and Nursing.
The Sioux City Career Academy currently provides 30 diverse career pathways to help students explore their professional interests before graduation. The Siouxland Start Program elevates the Education and Nursing pathways by integrating them directly with higher education. High schoolers enrolled in these two pathways will now take hybrid college courses hosted at Morningside University. These classes are organized exclusively for this high school cohort, ensuring a supportive and tailored transition into college-level coursework.
Beyond classroom instruction, the Siouxland Start Program places a heavy emphasis on practical, hands-on experience. Students who pursue the Education pathway will have the opportunity to complete practicums directly within the Sioux City Community School District, allowing future educators to observe and assist in active classrooms. Similarly, students enrolled in the Nursing pathway will have access to Morningside University's advanced Simulation Lab, a facility that provides a safe, realistic environment to practice essential patient care skills alongside experienced instructors.
“Morningside University is deeply committed to building strong partnerships with our local high schools. Through the Siouxland Start Program, we are excited to empower students to challenge themselves academically and gain college experience, giving them the tools and confidence to pursue rewarding careers in education and nursing,” said Dr. Chris Spicer, Provost and Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs at Morningside University.
"Our partnership with Morningside University reflects our shared commitment to preparing students for the future. By expanding access to career and technical education and dual credit opportunities, the Siouxland Start program empowers students to explore meaningful pathways in nursing and education while still in high school. This work not only prepares our students for in-demand careers, but it also builds a stronger future for Siouxland through education and workforce development.," said Jim Vanderloo, interim superintendent of the Sioux City Community School District.
The Siouxland Start Program represents a major step forward in connecting secondary education with university resources, ultimately strengthening the local professional pipeline in two critical community sectors.
